Cheap lunch ideas - save money and make your own sandwiches

I think that most people would agree that it would be good to save a little bit of extra cash without making huge changes to our lifestyle and there is one area in particular that perhaps you can.  You can quite easily save money on lunches, particularly if you buy your lunch from the work canteen or a high street sandwich shop.

A Caesar salad Don't buy ready made sandwiches or prepared salads.  Most supermarkets and outlets such as Boots have meal deals where you can buy a sandwich, wrap or small pot of salad, drink and a snack (crisps, cereal bar or chocolate bar) for £3 - £4, but you can make your own lunch for a fraction of the price!

For example make a salad yourself.  Chicken Caesar salad is so quick and easy to make.  Simply buy an iceberg lettuce, chicken pieces, Parmesan shavings, croutons and salad dressing.  The average cost of the ingredients to make a week's worth of salad is around £1.50.  For a little variety you could very easily do a pasta salad, couscous or a jacket potato.  These are all really cheap options.

If you prefer sandwiches then you can do this on the cheap too.  A loaf of bread can often be bought for less than a pound and with a packet of ham and some cheese slices you'll be saving money in no time.  If you have a toaster and a microwave at work, how about some good old fashioned beans on toast?  If you have a roast dinner on a Sunday chances are there will be some left over meat which would be great in sandwiches or salads for your packed lunch.

If you like crisps or a bit of chocolate with your lunch, consider buying the large multi pack bags of crisps and from stores such as Aldi this can work out as cheap as 10p a pack.  A lot of work places have crisps and chocolate machines which at around 80p a pop is seriously overpriced.  If you're one of those people that tend to give in to the chocolate machine when you have your afternoon slump, plan ahead and buy a multi pack of Mars bars.  You can oftens find packs of 4 bars of chocolate for a pound!

A cheese sandwich for lunch Drinks with your lunch can be straightforward too with a multi pack of orange or apple juice.  If you like to have a bottle of coke or other fizzy drink with your lunch, buy a 2 litre bottle and transfer some to a 500ml bottle each day.

Soups are always a great option and cheap.  Link to article.

You do have to be disciplined and remember to make your lunch each day and it's important to plan ahead and not leave it all to the morning where the chances are you'll be in a rush to get out the door and not bother.  But if you make your own lunches you could have saved yourself up to £20 a week, so what are you going to spend that on?  You could treat yourself to a nice steak dinner and a bottle of wine!  You know it makes sense.
